Founded in 2005 by John Cunningham, the label serves as a creative hub for a collective of globally recognized artists, producers, and composers.

John Cunningham, who founded the label in 2005 after a decade at Reckless Records in Soho. He relaunched it around Ambient Jazz Ensemble after meeting composer Colin Baldry at a music publisher's Christmas party.

Here & Now Recordings was founded by John Cunningham in 2005. Before that, John spent a decade at Reckless Records on Berwick Street in Soho — the shop on the cover of Oasis’s (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? — where regular visitors included Theo Parrish, Kenny Dope, Carl Craig, Andrew Weatherall, and Gilles Peterson.

The label launched into afrobeat and broken beat, but Napster and the wider industry downturn forced a pivot into music publishing for TV, advertising, and film. The real turning point came at a music publisher’s Christmas party, where John met composer Colin Baldry. Baldry played him Suite Shop, the album that became Ambient Jazz Ensemble’s debut: “The music blew my mind back then and continues to,” John says. He relaunched the label around it, with Gilles Peterson instrumental in getting it onto the radio.

John’s own musical path runs from jazz — he was “brought up listening to jazz from birth” — through a teenage rebellion into hard rock and metal, to hip-hop via the Beastie Boys, Run DMC, and Public Enemy: “sampling made my dad’s record collection credible!” That loop, back from sampling to jazz, still shapes what Here & Now releases: warm, retro, analogue sound, built for feeling as much as listening.
