With International Women’s Day around the corner, we at Here and Now Recordings wanted to shine a light on some of the incredible women that work within the music industry. There are so many women we’d love to spotlight, but find 6 below, we hope you enjoy!

Musician, Producer and DJ, Nabihah Iqbal makes the list for many reasons- Weighing of the Heart is an incredible album being one of them! Prior to 2017, Nabihah was known as Throwing Shade, however with the release of Weighing of the Heart, she switched to her given name ‘to stand proudly as a female British Asian artist making music’. Last year saw Nabihah curating a series of events for Somerset House and we cannot wait to see what 2020 has in store for her.
Kate Hutchinson is a journalist, DJ and Podcaster. Last year for International Women’s Day, Kate launched The Last Bohemians- a podcast profiling fearless women and maverick outsiders in the arts. It remains one of our favourite podcasts of 2019, and we can’t wait for season 2 which should be returning this month!
Back in 2010, Julie Adenuga was working at the Apple Store and made her debut into the music industry by joining Rinse FM on their Drive-Time show. In a lovely twist of fate, 2015 saw Julie’s move to the newly formed Beats 1 as their main London host. With accolades from Forbes 30 Under 30, NME’s 500 Most Influential People in Britain- no wonder she’s known as one of the most influential tastemakers in the UK
Lizzo is an example of how the internet is a game-changer to how we consume music. In 2016, Lizzo signed to Atlantic and released ‘Good as Hell’. But it wasn’t until 2019 that Lizzo became a household name- and it was all due to TikTok! The DNA challenge that used a short snippet of Lizzo’s 2017 single ‘Truth Hurts’ gained the song so much popularity that it was added to the deluxe version of her album Cuz I Love You. We couldn’t end our International Women’s Day roundup without a nod to Here and Now’s very own Blessed Is Ruby. Blessed Is Ruby is a concept project by Oli Rose which explores the journey of a 22 year old woman who is on a mission to find a spiritual connection with her late father in order to move forward with her life. After a lot of soul searching, Ruby gains the confidence and self belief to start moving forward- and it’s here that we join Ruby and travel through her adventurous mind, world and imagination.
